Beowulf, the hero of the epic poem Beowulf, is a dragon slayer who faces death in order to save a threatened community. Grendal, Beowulf’s arch enemy, is undefeated by man-made weapons, but only Beowulf, with his superior strength, is able to fight Grendal without weapons. Beowulf’s characteristics and good deeds are very similar to those of Spiderman. Spiderman is a superhero whose spider-like powers and super strength developed unexpectedly. Beowulf’s major priority, following the Anglo-Saxon tradition, was to help society through his actions to gain recondition and better his reputation through fulfilling good deeds. Spiderman had a similar mindset. Once Spiderman’s uncle died in a shooting accident, Spiderman did everything he could to find the man who shot his uncle and help stop other crimes that would lead to more injured people. Spiderman and Beowulf also have unique powers and use them for good. Beowulf has superhuman strength, unlike the other men. The others must use man-made weapons to try to defeat Grendel whereas Beowulf has superhuman strength and does not need anything else but his bare hands. Although Beowulf is able to do so much with his powers, he decides to only use them to help others by defeating dragons. Spiderman’s unique powers are: spider senses, super-strength, and web-shooting. Like Beowulf, Spiderman only uses these powers to fight crime and save society from danger. Beowulf and Spiderman both have high reputations and are idolized by society for using their powers for protection instead of selfish reasons.
"All-knowing God must have sent you such words; nothing so wise from a warrior so young has ever reached these ancient ears...If your lord,Hrethel's son, is slain by a spear, or falls sick and dies...I say that the Geats could do no better, find no man better/ Suited to be king, keeper of warriors and their treasure, than you..., Beloved Beowulf."
